"Pretty Woman" will be hitting Broadway as a musical. "Pretty Woman" the movie stars Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in the titular role. The story centers around a down-on-her-luck Hollywood prostitute Vivian Ward (Roberts) who is hired by a wealthy businessman, Edward Lewis (Gere), to be his escort for several business and social functions. Over the course of Vivian's week-long stay with him, Edward falls in love with Vivian. The 1990 romance classic put Julia Roberts on the map and grossed $550 million at the box office. It became one of the highest money-makers of 1990; today it is one of the most financially successful entries in the romantic comedy genre.

According to the New York Post, the film's director Garry Marshall was in New York with producer Paula Wagner. The duo was meeting with Broadway composers, lyricists and directors, to bring "Pretty Woman" to the stage. J.F. Lawton (who wrote the screenplay for the movie) will write the script. The plans for a Broadway musical have since been confirmed by Entertainment Weekly.

Many are comparing the film's adaptation into a musical to that of "Pygmalion," a play by George Bernard Shaw, and its Academy Award winning musical version "My Fair Lady," starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. The "Pretty Woman" film is in itself a loose interpretation of the Pygmalion story. "Pretty Woman's" similar storyline could have similar massive success as a musical.

The New York Post had also reported the possibility of a musical adaption back in 2001 with Marshall directing and former Disney exec Peter Schneider, but plans fell through. The news regarding "Pretty Woman" The Musical follows a slew of recent news about popu culture movies turning into musicals. There are rumors of "Mean Girls: The Musical" with Tina Fey's hubby writing the music, "Heathers" The Musical heading towards Off-Broadway, and "The Princess Bride" play.
