If the drama "God's Gift - 14 Days" could be summed up with one word, that word would be responsibility.
At first the drama, starring Lee Bo Young as Kim Soo Hyun and Jo Seung Woo as Ki Dong Chan, seemed to be about a mother and her responsibility to protect her daughter from a serial killer. And that is the driving force behind the time travel drama that gives Kim Soo Hyun two weeks to save her daughter's life.
For the first episodes the drama examines Lee Bo Young's choices as a parent. While Kim Soo Hyun seems like a concerned parent, she was not really there for her daughter when she needed her. She was focused on her daughter's potential rather than encouraging and protecting her.
As the drama unfolds, the theme of responsibility plays out over and over again. The serial killer that Lee Bo Young and Jo Seung Woo are chasing is one who murders women who have abandoned their children. He never bothers to investigate what circumstances led to the abandonment. One of those women was the mother of Ki Young Gyu, played by Baro.
Ki Young Gyu also waits for his father who had no choice but to abandon him when he went to jail. That father, Ki Dong Ho, went to jail because Jo Seung Woo's character did not protect him. And Jo Seung Woo might have stayed in the police force after the terrible incident in which he maimed his nephew if only his superior officer, played by Jung Gyu Woon, had not abandoned him.
In the years since the incident Ki Dong Chan has wasted his life and not lived responsibly. Now, with the gift of an extra 14 days he has a chance to accept responsibility and make some changes. He has taken on the responsibility of helping Lee Bo Young and an old man who he secretly thinks might leave him a fortune. While, the latter is opportunistic, at least it's a start at reclaiming his life.
Lee Bo Young's husband, played by Kim Tae Woo, also bears responsibility for some of the events that lead to his daughter's death. The plot to kidnap his daughter may have originated with a case he defended ten years before.
And the killer feels that he must be held accountable for a life he ruined. Each action good or bad has consequences.
As the characters learn more about who set the events leading to Saet Byul's death in motion, they may learn how to prevent it from happening. And in the process each of the characters may have to account for what they've done.
