This week's episode of New Girl season 3 episode 20 "Mars Landing" opens with the whole team drinking hard core. They have some hilarious drinking games going on. Until they all wake up lying in a big pile of bodies and cough pillows, hungover and in shame.
Jess is missing Jacob's first birthday (she's his godmother). "I'll be right there," Jess lies through her damn godmother teeth. "I have really bad news," she tells Nick. They have to go to a 1 year old's birthday party. Poor Nick. Poor Jess.
Meanwhile, Schmidt and Winston got some hungover bagels and coffee. They meet their hot new neighbors, and Schmidt's bagel falls out of his mouth. One of the new girls points it out and Schmidt answers nonsensically, "I'm Jewish." That explains everything.
Cece, in a hoodie, comes in and tells the boys that she's been texting the young Australian guy she's been dating. "Buster, your child bride?" Schmidt says. She sent him a lot of weird texts, including one that involves them buying a rabbit together. In typical New Girl fashion, she continues to take the bad advice from the law firm of Schmidt, Coach and Winston. She is about to send a "follow-up text" at the advice of Winston that Schmidt says is "borderline pornographic."
While searching for a gift for 1 year old Jacob, very hunogver Jess and Nick get into a conversation about the future.
"All the guys in this building are so sweet," says hot new neighbor #1, as the three boys unpack boxes and reveal a photo of her and her boyfriend. However, hot neighbor #2 is single. My guess is that the episode will reveal that she is into girls. The boys, of course, take up the opportunity to shake hands and go after #2.
Jess and Nick are still arguing about the future. In rare insightful moment of clarity, Nick says, "You can create a plan for your life, and then crazy things get thrown at you." Nick thinks it's crazy to plan for everything and Jess thinks it's crazy not too. "You're talking about the fake future!" Nick yells in classic Nick fashion.
And then Nick lets his mouth make a huge mistake. "Then what should we do, should we just break up?" After a moment of awkwardness, they both burst out laughing. However, despite the laughter, it's clear that the seed of doubt has been planted in both their minds. Then, instead of taking some time off to clear their minds, they decide it's a good time to work on putting a complicated child's toy together. Nick accidentally drops a lit lighter on his blanket and as the physical fire grows, so does their argument. As they both find out that there is a fire, and the fire alarm goes off, Jess blurts out, "If I was alway honest with you, we would never stop fighting!"
The whole building is outside, including the two hot neighbors, the three boys, and the two hot neighbors' broken stuff. Winston blurts out the truth about why the stuff is broken and then attempts to carry a huge dresser by himself.
Cece calls her child bride, who happens to be walking over to talk to her "with this face." They are cute. They are getting pancakes.
This episode is starting to turn into a living embodiment of Musiq Soulchild's song "Just Friends." Nick and Jess love each other, but they may not be the best as a couple. "I miss my friend," they say to each other. They are breaking up.
