A lot of people were shocked when they found out that Ellen Page was gay. The Oscar-nominated actress revealed her true sexual orientation during the LGBT Teens conference in Las Vegas. The star of Juno said during her speech that she was tired of hiding and lying by omission by not telling everyone that she was a lesbian.
The 26-year old actress inspired many teens who were afraid to come out and let everyone know their sexuality. Ellen said, "I'm here today because I am gay. And because... Maybe I can make a difference." She added, "To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility."
It was not easy for the talented actress to talk in front of a large crowd. Ellen admitted that she suffered for years hiding her real sexuality to the public. She said, "My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered." The Inception star got more emotional when she said, "And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."
The Ellen Page gay revelation caused mixed reaction from the public. She was praised by some people for her bravery. Sir Patrick Stewart was among those who congratulated the actress for her act. He was even accussed of being gay because of his support for Ellen and the LGBT community.
Known for his role as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, Sir Patrick is good friends with Ian McKellen, who is openly gay. The actor answered the gay rumors by tweeting, "You can't catch gay by hanging out with #LGBT people."
Just like Sir Patrick, Ellen also received negative comments for being a lesbian. A pastor sent her a letter and offered her salvation for being gay. She replied through Twitter saying "2 da Pastor who wrote me - Being gay isn't a belief. My soul isnt struggling & I don't want arms of Heavenly Father around me. A girls arms? Yes."
Amen to that girl! How do you feel about Ellen Page being gay?
