New Yorkers craving a sugary fix in the middle of the night can rejoice: Sprinkles Cupcakes Bakery opened the city's first cupcake vending machine Tuesday, to the excitement of taste buds everywhere.
The 24-hour cupcake dispensing ATM uses a long arm to produce a cupcake for hungry New Yorkers in a manner of seconds, according to Sprinkles Cupcakes founder Candace Nelson. The vending machine is located next to the Manhattan Sprinkles' store.
The machine holds up to 760 cupcakes at a time, with 20 flavors of the sweet snacks; including banana dark chocolate, cinnamon sugar and Cuban coffee. Yum! Each cupcake costs $4.50 and $5.00 for two smaller canine-friendly cupcakes for dogs.
Candace Nelson and her husband, Charles Nelson, developed the idea after late-night pregnancy cravings, according to DNAinfo New York.
"Even as Sprinkles' founder, I couldn't get my midnight cupcake fix! I thought 'there has to be a way' and so the concept of the Sprinkles Cupcake ATM was born," she said.
Charles Nelson also said that the cupcakes were restocked two to three times a day to get them fresh, according the New York Post.
According to DNAinfo New York, consumers were most excited about the convenience of the vending machines.
"I think it's really great that it's 24 hours," Sprinkles fan Zoe Lee said, according to DNAinfo New York. "I can come here whenever to get a cupcake."
The Upper East Side location is the fifth in the country, with other machines in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas.
Although it may be one of the first vending machines for cupcakes, other unique food dispensers have popped up all over the world. Wonder Pizza USA dispensers freshly made pizzas in several locations in the United States. Hot Fresh Fries vending machines serve up a steaming dish of French Fries to Australians.
