Well, "How I Met Your Mother" is officially over. Thankfully for CBS, I mean, us viewers, there is a new friend group based comedy sitcom on CBS called "Friends With Better Lives," the pilot of which aired right after the "How I Met Your Mother" series finale. The New York Times thinks it's terrible and hilariously states that the show "should really be called "Friends With Genitals," better to reflect what its characters spend most of their time talking about." To say the least, the show is a tad contrived.
Here's the premise: Bobby (Kevin Connelly), an ob-gyn, and Andi (Majandra Delfino) have been married for seven years. Dawson, I mean James Van Der Beek, I mean Will, has broken up with his wife because she slept with their couples counselor. Jules (model Brooklyn Decker) is surprisingly funny. Or rather, Brooklyn Decker is surprisingly funny. So far. Jules has met a new love, Lowell (Rick Donald), a man who loves nut cheese, at a yoga retreat. He's handsome but weird. Kate (Zoe Lister Jones) walks in, after going on a date with Bobby's med school friend who is apparently a total weirdo; Will, who thinks she is totally superficial, wants to set her up with his friend Jimmy... who is half her height.
"So there was nothing that you didn't like?" Will asks Kate. "Not even... a little?"
"Nope," Kate responds.
"Really? Jimmy says you cut the date... short."
Meanwhile, Will sets up a surprise party for Andi, except that when the lights go on revealing all their friends, Andi is on her knees.
Will's ex-wife Val finally appears. Will is ecstatic.
Will wants her to talk in front of everyone who doubted that she would come back, including "Kate, who said marriage is a bitch," Will says
"No, I said you married a bitch," Kate responds.
In fact, cynical Kate is right because Val hands Will divorce papers. Jules uses this moment to announce that she is engaged. Kate pretends to be happy for her friend. But she is crying because Kate is the only single one. Except, she is not, because Will is single now.
Overall, the show was okay. Maybe it could get better, but honestly whoever is writing this show seems to have written for every other failed comedy sitcom before it.
Did you watch the first episode of "Friends With Better Lives"? Do you think it will live up to HIMYM?
