The How I Met Your Mother finale aired on April 1 with an ending that left fans divided. The controversial last episode of the nine-year show came out of left field, and the Internet blew up with comments from people who loved it, and people who hated it.

Aware of the strong reactions the episode generated, HIMYM co-creator Craig Thomas took the opportunity to reach out to fans on Twitter regarding the show's extremely unexpected ending. The message, which was sent through several tweets, said, "Thank you all. I mean it: Every possible reaction to the last 44 minutes... thank you all... #HIMYM. The fact that we have been a tv sitcom that has received this much passion from fans, for 9 years (not just tonight) - thank you. We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till the very end. Thanks for taking that ride with us."

"We did a finale about life's twists and turns and that is not always what happens... but THANKS! Seriously - no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU... you were with us. We love you. Thanks for this ride," he added.

The How I Met Your Mother ending caught fans off-guard, even though several theories have been tossed around online all throughout the season. Cast member Cristin Milioti who played the Mother, even called one theory "insane," though fans had no idea at the time if she was just trying to throw the rumor mill off or if she was simply appeasing the viewers. [SPOILER ALERT]

In the final episode, everything started off like everyone expected it to. Lily and Marshall had one more baby and Marshall became a judge. Robin and Barney got married. Ted met the Mother, whose name turned out to be Tracy McConell, and they got married. That could have been happily ever after but then there came a twist. Many years after, Barney and Robin divorced, Tracy got sick and died, and Ted finally ended up with Robin.
