The How I Met Your Mother finale surprised fans with an ending that proved there is a thin line between love and hate. It caused social media to blow up, and viewers are still debating on whether the final episode of the nine-year TV series was a good or bad one. Josh Radnor, who played the show's main character, Ted Mosby, also had to weigh in on the matter of course.
In a long interview with Vulture, the actor revealed that he already knew about the ending way back in season one. "They had mentioned to me the twist about the mother in the first season, and I kind of put it out of my head. I didn't know if they would actually want to come back to it and do that, especially after Cristin [Milioti, who played the mother], because she was so wonderful and the fans seemed to really take to her. So I asked them 'Are you guys still doing that?' And they said yeah."
When asked to comment on the criticism the final received, Radnor had a lot to say. "There are so many opinions floating around. There have always been people that thought that Barney and Robin were perfect together, there have always been people that thought it didn't make sense. There are people that wanted Ted and Robin to be together. There are people that thought they didn't work together. So I just feel that part of the divisiveness and part of the anger and also part of the enthusiasm all speaks to something really great. I think if you're going to do something new and bold and daring, you're going to upset some people and you're gonna thrill others. I think it's better to do that than try to have some homogenized, safe ending that was never really what the show was. The show was always bold and daring and questioning assumptions and leading you where you thought you didn't want to go, but realized at the end that that was where you belonged," he declared.
HIMYM co-creator Craig Thomas also addressed the finale on this Twitter account. He pointed out that the finale was about life's twists and turns, and then thanked the fans for being with the show.
[SPOILER ALERT] The finale that was nine years in the making shocked a lot of fans. It started off like the happy ending everyone expected, but then veered off in a series of huge twists. The biggest surprise was that Ted ended up with the mother at first, and then after many years, with his old friend Robin Scherbatsky.
