The Ultimate Warrior is dead, and this time, it's real. The professional wrestler, who was once rumored to have died way back in 1991, passed away on Tuesday, most likely due to a sudden medical condition.
James Brian Hellwig - his real name - met his end while he was with his wife, Dana. The couple was reportedly walking to their car at the Grainy Suites Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona, when the wrestler collapsed. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, but the exact cause of death is still unknown. He was 54 years old.
The Warrior left the WWE in the 90s during the height of his fame, following a rift with WWE owner, Vince McMahon. He only returned to the WWE this year, and was just inducted to the Hall of Fame on Saturday - the night before WrestleMania XXX. He also appeared on Monday Night Raw, where he gave a rousing speech, which, coincidentally, talked about dying.
"No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own. Every man's heart one day beats its final beat; his lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them believe deeper in something larger than life, then his essence, his spirit will be immortalized by the storytellers, by the loyalty, by the memory," he said.
The WWE also released a statement on the Warrior's death. It said, "WWE is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the most iconic WWE Superstars ever, The Ultimate Warrior."
"Warrior began his WWE career in 1987 and quickly went on to become one of the biggest stars in WWE history. Warrior became WWE Champion at WrestleMania VI, defeating Hulk Hogan in an epic encounter. We are grateful that just days ago, Warrior had the opportunity to take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame and was also able to appear at WrestleMania 30 and Monday Night Raw to address his legions of fans."
"WWE sends its sincere condolences to Warrior's family, friends, and fans. Warrior was 54 and is survived by his wife Dana and his two daughters."
Wrestlers and WWE people alike have come out in droves on Twitter to pay tribute to the superstar. Everyone from Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon to The Iron Sheik, Rowdy Roddy Piper, The Undertaker, and Jake "The Snake" Roberts are mourning his passing. Kevin Nash, Batista, Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, The Rock, Trish Stratus, and Daniel Bryan have also paid their respects.
