The recent stabbing at Franklin Regional High School shocked everybody.
Since the stabbing took place around 7am Wednesday morning, the stabber, Alex Hribal, has been taken into custody and under psychiatric examination.
The motives for the Franklin Regional stabbing still remain a mystery, although mental illness is a high possibility.
Fellow student, Nate Moore, who was slashed in the face, described Hribal during the attack, saying, "He wasn't saying anything. He didn't have any anger on his face. It was just a blank expression."
According to The Chron, defense attorney Patrick Thomassey described Alex Hribal as a good student who got along with others. He also reportedly came from a normal, down-to-earth family.
If Alex is convicted as an adult, Hribal is likely to face decades in prison for stabbing and injuring 22 people at Franklin Regional.
Thomassey told ABC's Good Morning America that he hoped to move the charges against the 16-year-old to juvenile court, where he could be rehabilitated.
The attorney stated that the stabber is remorseful, though he has yet to understand the seriousness of his actions just yet.
Thomassey reportedly told ABC, "At this point, he's confused, scared and depressed. Over the next few days we'll try to figure out what the heck happened here. I think he understands what he did ... I don't think he realizes how severely injured some of these people are."
It has been reported that at least five students were critically wounded in the attack, including a boy who was on a ventilator after a knife pierced his liver, missing his heart and aorta by only millimeters.
According to USA Today, district attorney John Peck said that during the brief hearing on Wednesday night, Alex made statements indicating that he wanted to die.
Thomassey mentioned that the young sophomore's parents were as stunned as everyone else.
He stated, "They did not foresee this coming. They expressed absolute horror."
Although no reports of bullying have been reported yet, classmate Kaitlyn Pepper described Alex as being small for his age - "like a little boy" - and that he was teased quite a bit for it.
She explained, "I'd witnessed people say things to him. I couldn't tell who said it. I didn't realize it was all that bad."
Pepper continued, "They just said things. They ride him and ride him, and today was the day that he snapped."
