Grew up in the 1990's? Perhaps you will be thrilled to learn that Mrs. Doubtfire will be getting a sequel. That is, if you were left hanging by the first film, which was pretty much a closed book.
According to 'The Wrap', sources close to the project that a Mrs. Doubtfire 2 is now in the works at Fox 2000, and that both Columbus and Williams are set to return. David Berenbaum, who got his big break scripting Elf in 2003 and followed it up with The Haunted Mansion, Zoom and The Spiderwick Chronicles, has been hired to pen the script. At this time no plot details seem to be available - but that's not a huge surprise given how new the project seems to be.
The original film was based on the novel "Alias Madame Doubtfire" by Anne Fine and told the story of an irresponsible actor and loving father named Daniel Hillard (Williams) going through a bitter divorce with his wife Miranda (Sally Field). Depressed that he won't have the opportunity to spend time with his children, Daniel orchestrates a ruse: with some help from his make-up artist brother, Daniel becomes Mrs. Iphegenia Doubtfire, a Scottish nanny who is hired to take care of Miranda's house and his own kids. The film also starred Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, Matthew Lawrence and Mara Wilson, see the trailer below:
Fans online have mixed reactions towards the film. Some say that if 'maybe the sequel were made a couple of years after the movie came out it would have worked. But 21 years later, with the "kids" having kids of their own? No'.
Others also say that movie 'had closure. That was it and a sequel isn't needed, because it wouldn't make sense. Regardless of one's feelings on the film, they have to realize that it can't continue without having a plot so completely different that it would not need to be tied to this movie at all.'
