Recap

Portlandia Season 4 Episode 8 "Later in Life Drug Use" attempted to answer the all time important question: When is it too late in your life to do drugs? Brendan (Fred Armisen) and Michelle (Carrie Brownstein) are having a dinner party which features Jeff Goldblum, a friend who tells them that he and his wife tried drugs in "tea" form at a party. "Oh maybe we're not people who don't try new things?" Michelle is worried that they are getting too much into a routine. "I want to approach this the way we would buying a car," she says. Sounds fun! "Is this happening? It's a deal," Brendan says as he and Michelle shake hands. "It's a drug deal," she corrects him.

The next skit was pretty punny, I mean, funny. Phil and Gigi of Punslingers, who continue their business of creating terrible pun names for businesses. The first was an Italian restaurant, which triggered a laundry list of puns like: Venice the Menace, Planned Pizzahood, Pizza Paul & Mary, E.T. Phone Rome. Next up, an optometrist. "Lenses Me Your Ears," "TGI Framedays," "Spect-ocular," and worst of all, "A Side Order of French Four Eyes." Next, the United States calls and wants a new name. What do they come up? "Brewnited Tastes of Americano." Terrible.

Brendan and Michelle plan for their drug use; they schedule a dentist for mouth guards (for teeth grinder), they make a video for Grover, they hire a babysitter for an indefinite amount of time, and they draw a spiral on the calendar for drug day.

Spyke and Iris try out a new Thai place which was named Best Of by Bridgetown Weekly. They find out the food is awful, and rather than rail at the restaurant owner, they direct their anger towards the Bridgetown Weekly. Spyke and Iris decide to go to the alt-weekly, and it turns out that the weekly is run by the Thai restaurant owner and workers.

Brendan and Michelle are brought home by the police and they wearing sweatshirts that read "If we are beyond control arrest us" and "Police we are on drugs." "Am I screaming right now?" asks Michelle in a normal voice. "Did I pull my own teeth out?" Brendan asks. The police leave, realizing how silly the situation is. Afterwards, Brendan and Michelle are able to recount the experience to their friends at another dinner party. "And it was crazy, we lost our minds," Brendan says proudly.
