Despite earlier news that the final leg of The Hobbit series is entitled 'There and Back Again', the film's director has just announced that a new title has been chosen. The new title is described by the directorial team as edgier and more impactful than the previous one. Peter Jackson has officially announced that the much-awaited movie will now be named as 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' and is scheduled to open on December 17.
In a statement posted on Facebook last Thursday, Jackson revealed, ""Our journey to make 'The Hobbit Trilogy' has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. 'There and Back Again' felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo's arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced--after all, Bilbo has already arrived 'there' in the 'Desolation of Smaug,'."
The director also shared that the team agreed to wait until they could watch a cut of the film before deciding on the final and official title of the trilogy's last serving. Afterwards, the new title has been unanimously adjudged to be more appropriate for the last movie. The team also described the previous title as more descriptive of Bilbo's entire journey, making it more fitting as a title for the boxed set.
Meanwhile, the director also hinted at an extended cut for 'The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug', featuring an all-original musical scoring by Howard Shore.
