With all the rants and frustrations voiced by geeks and movie buffs against the anticipated Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, detractors are starting to accept that it is going to happen. Now, although not directing the TMNT 2014 movie himself, Michael Bay as producer gives him more power on the content, script, and final edit of this film.
According to Screenrant.com, it was revealed by Michael Bay that during early production of the movie, the mythos of the Ninja Turtles will undergo a drastic change and no longer will they be "mutant turtles" but "aliens" with turtle-like features. That was met with countless rants from critics to geek bloggers citing that "just like the Transformers, Michael Bay is once again raping our childhood".
In the aftermath of the reception, the script was changed and Michael Bay detracts what he earlier stated and that the Ninja Turtles will still be those same turtles everybody grew up to love.
Now that the trailer for the TMNT 2014 movie premiered last March 27 on YouTube, we get to see finally what the Ninja Turtles look like. The trailer showed the beloved Ninja Turtles have undergone some drastic physical change, and as the trailer further hints, will be filled with explosions, over the top action, and borderline racist jokes, like all other Michael Bay movies.
The movie looks like the short-lived 'Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation' series with all the characters on steroids. It's evident that the personalities of the turtles are emphasized on what they wear, besides giving them the usual color- coordinated bandana (in which the trailer referred to as "masks") much like all turtle incarnations, but the movie does much more by bringing in individual costume gadgets like Donatello's night vision goggles, Leonardo's Samurai guard (So is it Ninja or Samurai?), Raphael's shades (which is worn during the night?) to Michelangelo's sweater wrapped around his waist (which of course will not hamper his movements).
What ever Ninja look they previously had is lost with this film; it looks like stealth will still be a factor but will be emphasized less with Michael Bay's signature bombastic approach.
In the end, what will happen, will happen. It is comforting to realize that although the film may be an epic tragedy, the TMNT franchise has survived worse. Although, most die-hard fans are actually hoping that the film does well and not turn out into the money-making giant, that is the Transformers, devoid of what made it great in the first place. Fans and casual movie goers are in for what may be the greatest tribute to Eastman and Lair's TMNT or as expected, the raping of a beloved, generation-defining franchise.
