With news that Zack Snyder is confirmed to direct Warner Bros.' Justice League movie after "Batman vs. Superman", fan reaction has been a mix of positive and negative.
One risk that Zach Snyder is embarking on is that although "Man of Steel" was a commercial success, "Batman vs. Superman" may not be the same, which risks the development of the Justice League movie. The comic book movie franchise bubble is being projected to burst anytime soon and taking on three big budget movies may lead to a tepid storyline.
One has to realize that although Marvel has been racking in billions of profits and is beloved by comic book fans, DC does not have the same story power that Marvel does. Possible storylines that Marvel can apply to freshen up the franchise cannot apply to the DC film universe: one reason being is that the DC universe is limited to their own limitless super powers.
How do you bring in vulnerability (which is essential to any good story) to an invulnerable character?
Although Batman being only human is perceived as invulnerable, Batman is the most powerful of all Justice League characters as evidenced in comics and even the DC animated movies. The fact that he is human make him not complacent on his abilities: to always have a plan B is his power.
That is the problem that writers of the DC movie franchise will encounter and this may lead to outrageous plot devices and the ever-insulting "shock power" just to boost seats in the movie houses. The Man of Steel movie had a great story up until you reach the destruction porn scenes near the end of the movie, and of course, Zod's death. It came as no surprise that despite making profits, the film received a lot of bad reviews.
A good plot makes a good movie. Zack Snyder is gifted with having a good eye on cinematography, but if the plot is tepid, fans will eventually get tired of the "Michael Bay" approach and move on.
