On the 1st episode of the new SBS Monday/Tuesday drama "Dr. Stranger" broadcast on May 5th, Kim Sang Joong played the role of the father of Park Hoon, played by Lee Jong Suk, and attracted the attention of the viewers.
Park Chul is the best thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon of Korea and wanted to block war between North and South Korea. Because of this, he decides to go to North Korea for Kim Il Sung's heart surgery. However, he was deserted by South Korea and lives quietly with his son in North Korea as a doctor.
Kim Sang Joong, an "A-list Actor" had great presence even with a special appearance. He is always without expression to his son Park Hoon (played by Lee Jong Suk) but as a doctor, he was always proud of his son who is growing up to be a doctor. On the day that his son went to introduce himto his first love Song Jae Hee (played by Jin Se Yeon)'s house, he gave a bouquet of flowers and made viewers laugh.
He showed fatherly love through his sacrifice for his son and made the viewers cry watching this scene. For his son's future, he asked another doctor that he knew to look out for his son and said without emotion, "Don't worry about me." However, the lonely smile of Kim Sang Joong turning away showed the heart of a father that wanted to have a strong presence but still very much in love and caring for his son. This made the viewers cry.
On this day, Kim Sang Joong ended his short special appearance in "Dr. Stranger" with the death of Park Chul.
