Twitter mute button allows you to silence tweets from users you follow, without actually feeling the need to unfollow them. While Twitter Unfollow allows users to "unfollow" tweets from those who you do not wish to see in your timeline - and lets others know that they are no longer being followed.
This new Twitter mute button filters out the content from annoying users to not let you see any of their activity in your timeline. This works discreetly without letting the muted users know if you have muted them or not. This only means to say that even if certain users are being followed for certain reasons, you can always choose the content you wish to see on your timeline better.
The mute feature will be rolled out by Twitter in the coming weeks. It will also be available on Twitter's iPhone and Android apps as well on the website.
All you need to do to mute a user's tweet on Android, iPhone and web, is to tap "more" and then mute @username. However, to mute someone from their profile page, tap the gear icon and choose mute @ username. The mute icon will change to red if the person is muted and grey if the person is not muted. The Twitter mute button is displayed next to the setting gear.
"Muting a user on Twitter means their Tweets and Retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user. The muted user will still be able to fave, reply to, and retweet your Tweets; you just won't see any of that activity in your timeline. The muted user will not know that you've muted them, and of course you can unmute them at any time," Paul Rosania, product manager at Twitter was quoted by IBNLive.
The Twitter mute button further allows you to get better control over the content you see on the micro blogging site by letting you remove a user's content from key parts of your Twitter experience, Rosania added. However, third-party clients like Tweetbot and Tweetdeck already support the mute feature to be released soon. The Tweetbot app allows for muting hastags, keywords and users which Twitter hasn't introduced yet.
Earlier this week, Twitter also introduced a new feature that allows users to reset their user passwords with a text message. This is an initiative by the micro-blogging news friendly site to secure its user further. "The new process lets you choose the email address or phone number associated with your account where you'd like us to send your reset information," Mollie Vandor, Product Manager - Twitter, said in its blog post.
