Twitter Mute Button Launch: Twitter launched a mute button for users. This is a solution to a common problem on the social media platform during major sports events or TV shows. Feed can become overwhelmed with updates from over enthusiastic friends tweeting incessantly.

According to Daily Mail, it is available to all users from today, the feature can mute irritating or boring tweets temporarily, rather than blocking the account completely.

The mute function means not seeing that person's tweets in your timeline, or get notifications of his activity. Unlike blocking, the person can still interact with user's tweets; the user just won't be notified of said interactions, Yahoo Tech explained.

"Today we're beginning to introduce a new account feature called mute to people who use our iPhone and Android apps and twitter.com," Twitter said.

"Mute gives you even more control over the content you see on Twitter by letting you remove a user's content from key parts of your Twitter experience. In the same way you can turn on device notifications so you never miss a Tweet from your favorite users, you can now mute users you'd like to hear from less," Twitter promised.

Twitter also stressed the mute feature was secret.

"The muted user will not know that you've muted them, and of course you can unmute at any time."

Yahoo Tech provided a simple tutorial on how to mute users in Twitter. Here's how:

On your desktop

Users can mute a person from two different locations: individual tweets and profiles.

The first will probably be the most naturally occurring mute location, as users can make a snap judgment as soon as someone says something annoying in their feed.

To mute from timeline

• Simply click the More button on the bottom-right corner of a tweet.
• Then just click Mute.

To mute an individual

• Go to his profile and click the tool icon below his profile picture.
• Then click Mute.

On your phone

To mute a person straight from a tweet

• Tap the three dots at the bottom-right corner of the message.
• A menu will appear. Select the mute option.

To do the same from a person's profile

• Tap the tool icon, this time on the left below the person's profile photo.
