Amal Alamuddin engagement ring might cause George Clooney to face £100,000 tax bill on her £415k sparkler. According to Daily Mail, Alamuddin wore the ring as she walked through customs at Heathrow on May 13, after celebrating her engagement in Malibu with friends including Cindy Crawford.
Reportedly, British travellers who arrived in the UK from a non-EU country, have to pay customs duty and import VAT on all goods that exceed the stated allowances. HMRC rules dictate than any jewellery worth more than £390 brought into the UK from outside the EU, is subject to VAT and customs duty.
Human rights lawyer Alamuddin's diamond ring would be 2.5 per cent of the total value, £10,397.50, plus import VAT of 20 per cent of its value. That would leave the couple owing the taxman £93,577, Daily Mail reported.
According to Independent, Clooney's spokeman refused to disclose whether the actor's fiancée had stopped to pay the duty at the airport.
"I have no idea of the validity of your story and I have no intention of even addressing it," he told the Daily Mail.
An HMRC spokesman refused to confirm if the tax body would open an investigation, but told the Independent, "We do not discuss the affairs of individual customers."
"Bringing in goods from outside the EU, whether in person or through the post, could attract customs duty or import VAT. Customers should check the current limits on the HMRC website," he added.
According to report, this isn't the first time a celebrity was asked to pay at British airports though. In 1998 Victoria Beckham was asked failed to declare£50,000 engagement rings she bought for her husband while she was visiting America. That cost her £3,000.
Clooney, 52, proposed to Alamuddin on bended knee on April 22. The couple were first photographed stepping out together in London in October. The two have since been spotted go on board on romantic trips including a trip to Tanzania in March, where they were photographed getting cozy during a safari, and they also visited the Seychelles.
