Samsung Health Band release date or price has not been announced although the South Korean firm did announce a next generation ultimate wearable device. It's called the Simband.
The concept behind the Samsung health band relies on wavelengths of light striking the user's skin. In essence Simband will continue to track a number of measures of health like blood pressure, respiration, hydration, heart rate, and CO2 in the blood.
A demonstration of Simband was Samsung's "Voice of the Body" San Francisco event. This is similar to one found on ECG machines in hospitals. A battery will ensure that the wearer can use the device 24 hours.
The news of the Simband precedes the Apple's WWDC 2014, and clearly Samsung is signaling its space in the smartband market. The 'speculative' Simband will run on a new OS labeled SAMI, Samsung Architecture Multimodal Interactions. Sami will be a single health platform combining information from non-Samsung health devices as well. SAMI APIs will be available by the end of the year for developers.
Sami will function as a data "bank" to maintain sensitive health data on the Galaxy S smartphones. It's job will be to collect data from various health and fitness apps in order to provide insights to customers.
Ram Fish, president of digital health for Samsung Electronics said, "Samsung doesn't own the data, you do. We are a custodian of it."
He said in a statement, "We believe that once we're working from a common platform, sensors will become more accurate, and will be brought to market more quickly".
Fish noted that SAMI will "compliment" Samsung's existing S Health platform.
Samsung's early move, deeper into the wearable technology market is well timed as a Healthbook app linking to the iWatch is a sure bet at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference.
