Taylor Swift fans might be disappointed in the new trailer of The Giver. The new movie preview features black and white imagery but doesn't seem to highlight a scene about the "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer who plays a supporting role in the film.
Reportedly, Meryl Streep, who plays as the Chief Elder, has the spotlight in the new clip. The Giver is based on the Newberry Award-winning classic by Lois Lowry, set in a futuristic utopic world where no conflict exists. The story focuses on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a 12-year-old boy who is chosen to be a "Receiver of Memory" a huge responsibility in their society. As his lessons in memories progress, Jonas begins to see the hardships that existed in the civilizations that came before his.
According to Yahoo Movies, the new trailer shows that Streep's Chief Elder character leads an isolated society where emotions, privacy, and basic colors have all been stripped away from its citizens. She sums up her philosophy as, "When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong." All the memories of how the world once was are held in the mind of the Giver (Jeff Bridges), who will pass on his knowledge to one chosen young person. But when Jonas (played by Brenton Thwaites) is selected and he learns about his capacity for feelings, his deviation from "sameness" makes him a threat to the established order.
"The first minute of the trailer pays homage to the book, which is set in black and white, with the only color being seen during Jonas memories lessons. From the trailer we know now that the film will start out in black and white and then transfer into color as soon as Jonas begins his giver lessons," Mstarz described.
Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard also star in The Giver which will hit theatres August 15.
