"The Fault In Our Stars" is doing well in the box office. Its fate was quite expected since the young adult novel it was based on was also an international best seller.
The movie which stars teen favorites Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, is expected to reach as high as $50 million on its opening weekend in US alone. The projected figure is way above a forecast of $35- $40 million opening weekend sales given earlier this week.
It surely is likely that the movie will hit if not pass the $50M mark since ticket sales ranged from $20- $22 million on Friday and is still continuing to sell like pancakes days after.
Although Woodley's "The Fault In Our Stars" box office standing might not probably outdo her other teen novel turned movie "Divergent" which had boasts of $54M on its opening weekend. But, with the rate TFIOS' is doing at the box office, it would still be a win given it only has a $12M filming budget.
John Green's novel where the movie was based on is about two cancer patients and their star crossed love story.
On the other hand, Warner Bros.' sci-fi movie "Edge of Tomorrow," starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt follows "The Fault In Our Stars" box office lead with around $30 million.
"Edge of Tomorrow" has received impressive critical support, with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating for the story of a public relations officer forced to relive the same battle against alien invaders over and over.
According to Variety: "Domestically, the opening weekend for "Edge of Tomorrow" appears likely to fall short of the $37 million taken last year by Cruise's "Oblivion," which went on to gross $289 million worldwide."
However, "Maleficent's" second week is still doing good and is likely to topple "Edge of Tomorrow" off the second slot. Solid mid-week numbers have estimated a total of $93 million in US alone, and has already accumulated $235 million worldwide.
