Georges St-Pierre news reveals the former UFC welterweight champion's show of support for his friend and Canada's "King of Pot" Jimmy Cournoyer.
In a report by Bloody Elbow, Jimmy Cournoyer is awaiting sentence in the United States after pleading guilty to trafficking illegal drugs, specifically 100,000 kilos of marijuana, 83 kilos of cocaine, and for taking part in a conspiracy back in 1998. He is currently facing a mandatory sentence of a minimum of 20 years.
Georges St-Pierre sent his letter of support for his old friend to The Montreal Gazette, which in turn published it on their website on Wednesday.
"We had the time of our life. Jimmy became like a brother to me," the letter reads. "We travelled together, we trained together, we were going to restaurants, clubs and having a lot of fun. Jimmy is a very loyal friend who I respect very much."
The Georges St-Pierre news also reveals Jimmy Cournoyer's criminal background, wherein he was apprehended in a sting operation after an undercover officer sold him $65,000 worth of ecstasy pils.
Three years later, he was charged with reckless driving causing death, after a passenger was ejected out from the Porsche Cayenne he was driving lost control and crashed. For both charges, he was given a 42-month sentence. He was also alleged to have ties with late Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto.
But for Georges St-Pierre's part, Cournoyer was the same person that he was since they met in 2009 during their travels in exotic countries.
"I've never judged Jimmy," St-Pierre said in his letter. "Actually, what he was doing (with) his life wasn't any of my business. We have a very human relationship; we share the same passions, which is sport fitness and martial arts."
"GSP" also lauds Cournoyer's personality and believes that his luck will change for the better eventually.
"Jimmy is a very positive and strong person and I am sure he will learn huge lessons about all that," he wrote about the Georges St-Pierre news. "I am giving a lot of support to Jimmy because he deserves it. I told him last time I visited him that when he comes out of jail, I will have a place for him in my surrounding(s)."
