The HBO drama True Detective has enjoyed a critically acclaimed first season, with its non-linear, multiple timeline storytelling that follow the 17-year criminal investigation of two Louisiana State Police officers as they hunt for a serial killer.

Much of the show's success comes from the stellar performances and wonderful chemistry of its two main lead actors: Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. The show's upcoming second season has since inspired much speculation and anticipation.

Among the rumored season 2 castings include such A-list stars as Brad Pitt Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. Another star whose name has been persistently associated with the show is Jessica Chastain.

But show creator Nic Pizzolatto dashed all these rumors with the statement he made at the Banff World Media Festival press conference.

"Literally, not a single rumor about casting that has been printed anywhere has any truth to it whatsoever. I mean that literally. I've seen entertainment reporters say 'My sources say...' There are no sources. There's me and two other guys and they don't even know what I'm doing," Pizzolatto said.

And while Pizzolatto is keen in keeping his casting choices a top secret, he did confirm that the new season will feature not a pair of leads, but a trio. One of them is a strong female character that Pizzolatto already has a shorlist of actresses that he has in mind.

"Right now, we're working with three leads. It takes place in California. Not Los Angeles, but some of the lesser known venues of California and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambience of the place, much like we did with season one," he says. " The characters are all new, but I am deeply in love with all of them. We have the entire season broken out, and I have a couple of scripts, and we'll probably start casting within the coming month."
