Amidst divorce and infidelity rumors, hip hop's royal couple, Beyonce and Jay Z, kicked off their "On The Run" tour in style. Rolling Stone called the 16-city tour opener "a well synchronized cinematic spectacle" while USA Today says the concert was a "show that proves why they're on top together."
The two-hour cncert fired up Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida with more than 40 songs. The power couple performed mash-ups of each other's popular hits including the "Crazy In Love" and "Show Me What You Got" fusion that set the tone for the whole evening. The couple also used short films depicting Bey and Jay as Bonnie and Clyde as interludes between songs.
Beyonce performed hits like "Drunk In Love," "Love On Top," "Pretty Hurts," "If I Were A Boy," and more. Jay Z on the other hand riled the crowd with his own songs like "99 Problems," "Tom Ford," and "Dirt Off Your Shoulder." The Carters weren't shy about singing and merging each other's songs either.
"Jay Z allowed for breezy enjoyment; Beyoncé deamanded full and reverent attention," The New York Times said in a review of the concert.
Nothing riled the audience up more though than a surprise video towards the end of the show. In the clip, Jay Z and Beyonce shared never-before-seen footage from their 2008 secret wedding, as well as some clips of their two-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy. The audience saw Bey in her classic white wedding gown, the couple having "IV" tattoos on their ring fingers, as well as the moment Jay Z slipped the wedding ring on his (then) new wife's finger. Footage of the parents playing with Blue Ivy were also shown, amidst a sea of enthusiastic screams, according to US Weekly.
US Weekly also spoke to a concert-goer, who talked about how the couple sang "Halo" as they watched the clip. Another audience member gushed about how Jay Z announced that they were "celebrating love tonight" to the entire stadium.
"...you could definitely see the love between him and Beyonce on stage," added the same audience member, "Their chemistry is amazing."
Beyonce and Jay Z's "On The Run" tour will head off to Cincinnati, Ohio on June 28.
