Comedian Chris Rock has some choice words for controversial Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. In his opening monologue at the BET Awards, Rock said "An 83-year-old white man doesn't like black people. Is that news? Come on! A black man couldn't look him in the eye until he was 45. The first black man he ever met, he got for Christmas."
This was of course, in reaction to the news that audio tapes of Sterling making racist remarks had been leaked. In the said tapes, Sterling can be heard telling his mistress that he dislikes the fact that she keeps posting photos of herself with black people, including basketball legend Magic Johnson. Sterling continues that he doesn't care if the woman sleeps with black men, but that she should stop posting photos of them in her Instagram, and refrain from bringing them to Clippers games.
The news has sparked condemnation from all fronts, from NBA coaches, players, fans, and from Magic Johnson himself. Sponsors such as State Farm, Kia, Carmax, Virgin America, AquaHydrate, Red Bull, Sprint, Loanmart, Yokohama Tire Corporation, and Corona quickly withdrew their support of the Clippers/
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver took swift decisive action on the issue -- fining Sterling $ 2.5, and imposing a lifetime ban on him from the league.
Rock is known to be a staunch supporter of the African-American cause. He doesn't shy away from controversial comedy, and has used humor to draw attention to issues such as slavery and racism.
In fact, during the 2013 Oscars, he showed his support for the movie 12 Years A Slave with the following tweet:
"I can't believe for the first time in my life, I'm rooting for slavery."
He's certainly not shy about the jokes he made about Sterling's racism. He went on to say that he could relate to Sterling' wanting to shield his girlfriend from African-African basketball players.
"I don't want my woman around black basketball players." Me neither! Are you kidding me? Who the hell wants their woman around black basketball players?
