The "St. Vincent" movie trailer was released by the Weinstein Co. ahead of its October 24 opening date. Cast Bill Murray's performance as an alcoholic bum who strikes an unlikely friendship with his boy neighbor seems to be drawing awards buzz.
The "St. Vincent" movie trailer starts off with Bill Murray's character, St. Vincent de Van Nuys, trying to withdraw money from the bank only to learn that his account is overdrawn. That starts off a series of events where he eventually agrees to watch over his 12-year-old neighbour, Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher), for $11 an hour.
As it turns out, Bill Murray's character is not somebody a single mother (Melissa McCarthy) would entrust her son. So he brings Oliver to the racetrack and tells him to break the nose of the bully who torments him. He also introduces him to Naomi Watt's Russian character, Daka, a stripper whom he introduces as "lady of the night," the "St. Vincent" movie trailer shows.
"The role of Vincent looks to be a throwback to the sort of bad-boy roles that made Murray a comedy icon in the 1980s," wrote Matt McDaniel for Yahoo Movies. "And a departure from some of the more understated roles he's done lately in films for directors like Wes Anderson and Jim Jarmusch."
Meanwhile, Nigel Smith of Indie Wire blog noted that Bill Murray's performance based on the "St. Vincent" movie trailer is good enough to generate some Oscar interest.
"It's hard to believe, but Bill Murray has only been nominated for an Oscar once (for "Lost in Translation") and didn't win the time he was up for one. That could change this fall when The Weinstein Company opens their feel good drama "St. Vincent," which stars Murray in a role that's sure to draw a lot of awards buzz should the film be any good," he wrote.
