It was bittersweet for the US Team as they really gave it all they've got in order to stand a chance against Belgium. The game played at Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador was one of the most anticipated matches for the knockouts. USA is coming in to the World Cup as an underdog with increasing number of supporters backing them up. The game has been gaining popularity not only in their mainland country, but Brazilians and other nationalities as well. This is the reason why many people are rooting for the team.
But Belgium is one of the stronger team going in to the competition. According to match statistics, Belgium had higher total shots and shots on target compared to USA but what the latter worked hard during the games was their possessions. Their possessions rate came in at 53% while Belgium was at 47%. It was a close match and both team really pulled out their cards in order to advance to the quarterfinals.
Both teams were working on their defense that none of them were able to make a goal in the first half of the competition. As the game progresses and the time was about to end at the 90th minute of the second half, the scores remained deadlock at 0-0. It was not until Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne attempted to pitch in a shot at the 93rd minute that the first goal of the match happened. It was three minutes after the full time and early on the extra time.
Belgium wanted to make sure that they can go through to the quarter finals and this is when Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku threw in another goal just twelve minute after the first goal at the 105th minute. There was still six minutes left before the extra time will end. And at the 107th minute, USA's Julian Green who plays as a winger for German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich made the first and only goal for USA.
USA was not able to recover after the back to back goal coming from Belgium and succumb to their defeat until the last whistle of the game. But USA made another history in the World Cup and that is coming from their goal keeper Tim Howard who was the star of the show. According to ESPN, Howard has accumulated 24 total saves for USA at this year's World Cup which is the most number of saves done by a player in the tournament history. He had 16 saves during their match against Belgium. Not bad at all for a team who didn't expect much in the World Cup.
