According to ESPN, Howards has accumulated 24 total saves for USA at this year's World Cup which is the most number of saves done by a player in the tournament history. He had 16 saves during their match against Belgium. This alone made history not only to FIFA but also to none-football enthusiast around the globe.
He was named as the star of the match between USA and Belgium. Videos of him showed the 35 year old goalkeeper, jumping, leaping, sliding and all sorts of acrobatic display just to ensure that the ball does not go through the net.
But the recognition he got for his standout performance belie to what he felt with their team's exit from the World Cup.
He said "None of that really matters to me." He continued "It is part of the job. It hurts when we lose, whether I had no saves or 20 saves, it doesn't mean any more or less."
Howard's 16 saves in one match has put him in the records of FIFA. Aside from that, he is one of the people who were named man of the match even when he is on the losing team. There were only two other players together with him of the list.
According to defender Matt Besler when asked about Howard's impact to their game, he says "Huge. He is our backbone. It is nice as a defender when you know you have that behind you."
Aside from the team's defender, USA Coach Jürgen Klinsmann also has good words for the goalkeeper "The way Tim played tonight was just phenomenal, just outstanding." He added "He kept us in the game a long time."
On the other hands, Belgium midfielder Kevin Mirallas told reporters days before the macth of his praise to Howard ""Tim is a superb goalkeeper, one of the 10 best in the world. Along with our goalkeeper, Thibault Courtois, he is one of the best at the World Cup, and he has lots of great qualities."
This will likely be Howard's last World Cup stint as currently he is 35 years old. The next world cup will be held in 2018 and will then be 39 years old. Just about the same time that his English Premier League contract with Everton will expire.
