Deliver Us from Evil is one of this year's horror films that many believe is capable of scaring the wits out of anyone. It talks about the experiences of a policeman, Ralph Sarchie, whose role is played by Eric Bana. He investigates a demonic possession with the help of Father Mendoza, played by Edgar Ramirez, who is former heroin addict.
Just like other movies that tackle issues on exorcism, Deliver Us from Evil is also depressingly boilerplate stuff. Its edgiest aspect is its claims that the movie has been based on true stories told by the real-life Ralph Sarchie, a former Bronx policeman. Apart from his police work, Sarchie got involved in some cases that are associated with demonology, and he wrote a book about it.
The film's director, Scott Derrickson, is believed to be the film-maker selected for making a Marvel flick for Doctor Strange. In the line of horror flicks, Derrickson has provided the public with 2012's "Sinister" and 2005's "The Exorcism of Emily Rose."
Although its critique indicates that the movie is a bit of a drab despite of its horror hype, critics say that one good thing about the movie is the fact that Joel McHale is in it. In Deliver Us from Evil, McHale plays the role of Sarchie's partner, Butler, who happens to have a bit of a smart-mouth. It would seem like McHale's character was the only one within the movie to realize that the events that they were going through were very silly, as evidenced by his general wardrobe. He is seen wearing a baseball cap backwards and an Alice in Chains t-shirt.
Since it is a fact that a lot of the people today are huge fans of cop New York cop stories and "true" tales of demonic possession, the director tried to come up with a hit by meshing the two concepts together. However, it would seem that this particular mash up did not do well for Deliver Us from Evil.
