Warner Brothers has brought in Russian director, Fedor Bondarchuk, to the new "Odysseus" movie. The film studio last created a movie based on Homer's works in 2004 with the star-studded "Troy" which was adapted from the "Illiad."
According to Deadline, "Odysseus" is tapping Russian director Bondarchuk to help make this "large-scale epic." With film making in his blood-he is the son of Oscar winning director Sergey Bondarchuk-the Russian director, actor, producer and on-air host last filmed the World War II drama "Stalingrad" which received multiple nominations from international award-giving bodies.
"Stalingrad" was the first Russian movie filmed in the 3D format. It tells the story of Russian soldiers who hold off Nazis while taking care of a young woman in the second World War.
Deadline reports the film to have earned $30 million. Interestingly, he reportedly shot the battle scenes without the use of green screen and instead built huge sets to create a more realistic scenario.
Bondarchuk is reportedly a star director in both Russia and China, two countries that film studios are trying to penetrate. This advantage has made the acclaimed director a desirable candidate to helm Warner Bros' next epic movie. How the offshore director will fare with CG creatures and Greek mythology monsters is yet to be seen.
The "Odysseus" movie tells the story of a Greek king's perilous journey as he returns home to Ithaca after fighting for a decade in the Trojan War. He faces monsters and dangers that will try to hinder his homecoming. All the while, his wife and son believes him to be dead and tries to deal with their own problems.
"The Killing's" Jeremy Doner will be writing the screenplay creating much anticipation for the new Greek film.
Gianni Nunnari ("300") Bernie Goldmann, and Shannon Gaulding will be producing. Although the "Odysseus" movie has not announced a release date and cast list yet, viewers can expect a star-studded ensemble for this film which was the case with the "Harry Potter" franchise and "Troy."
