Apple Applies Patent for Location-Based Security Settings

It may not be long now until Apple announces its latest innovation that is supposed to do away with the use of login usernames and passwords for security authentication. The concept of the proposed project is very simple, but could still use a great deal of advanced technologies. In other words, Apple would like to implement a unique security feature on the iPhones that will automatically lock the owner is away.

Apple already filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office for this innovation. The document, titled "Location-sensitive security levels and setting profiles based on detected location" goes in great detail on how Apple intends to do just that. These new security features, however, may not be added to iOS until version 9, in 2015.

The application enables iPhone users to configure both the hardware and the software once, then allow the device to adjust the security features dynamically.

Apart from determining the position of one's device, the device can also use a WiFI network, cellular tower data or even other mobile devices if GPS is not available. However, in order for this system to function properly, the phone would require at least two systems to be in use.

Apple also wants the device to learn certain user patterns, so that it knows what you're about to do. For instance, if you are at home, the device may know that you want to download all your pictures taken during the day or download some updates.

Another example is having an automobile profile. The location is not important, but the proximity to other devices may step in, allowing your iPhone to connect to the car's Audio System automatically and play a certain playlist.

Touch ID comes is present too. When at home, users can set their phones not to ask for the passcode and while they're away, the passcode will be replaced by Touch ID, so that only the user can unlock the phone.
