Set-Pieces Vs. Regular Defence Goals: The Latter Producing More Victories Than Ever Before

World Cup 2014

After Germany and Brazil's initial victory in the quarter final, producing a usual set-piece and defence goals.

This just goes to show the huge importance of defense goals in succeeding in the World Cup tournament this year in Brazil. Based on the results of the previous matches, the defense goals progression determine whether or not the teams will advance to the nest stage of the tournament or not.

In Friday's quarter-finals, one out of 4 goals were defensive in nature. Every goal was a set-piece in nature. Mats Hummels' produced a free kick winning end for Germany. On the other hand, Thiago Silva led his team, Brazil, to the second quarter final. David Luiz's free kick swamped Colombia. Colombia's James Rodriguez got a penalty for his sixth goal, ending the game at a losing end for Colombia in this round of second quarter-final.

Set-pieces proved to be the keys for winning in this year's World Cup tournament in Brazil, including in the initial group stages. Italy's set-pieces defences allowed them to advance ahead of England. Costa Rica have also advanced against their opponents through implementing set-pieces defences.

It has been of great disappointment to see not too many players in the tournament implementing set-pieces defences in the matches. Others have implemented these defences, but, unskilfully, unable to produce the success that had been desired. Players are encouraged to invest more time in practicing the exercise of set-pieces defences so as to be able to score more victories throughout the World Cup tournament.
