It happened in the Plaza de la Democracia, San Jose. With more than a thousand supporters present in the scene to peacefully cheer on their nation's team, the live stream match did not end well.
As Costa Rica loss 4-3 to the mighty Netherlands because of loss on penalties after 0-0 extra time, the high disappointed emotions of the fans gave birth to a violent clash between two big parties.
Some photos from the incident showed that fans were fighting with the police, while others are treated by the first aid crew after being hit with bottles.
Actually, one man was photographed with a knife stabbed in his back.
Then, an ambulance quickly took away the three injured people on stretchers.
Nevertheless, the police said that the reason for the fight is still unclear. However, they had arrested a total of eight people.
Lindsay Fendt, a reporter from Tico Times, who was at the Plaza de la Democracia, said that the fans at the back of the plaza were very unaware of the fight as till carried on cheering for the nation's team.
Costa Rica's largest newspaper, La Nacion, has confirmed that there were two men who were stabbed, and one man has been cut by a shard of glass.
The Costa Rica vs Netherlands match for the quarterfinals were the Los Ticos most impressive performance in the World Cup so far. Though the game ended with a loss, they showed really incredible skills on the field, as Holland only won by a point. The first 90 minutes of the game also ended in a goalless draw.
