NPR Music released today the Cat Power and Coldplay collaboration, which forms the main song and title track for the upcoming Wish I Was Here movie, directed by Zach Braff. The soundtrack to the movie is being released by Columbia Records.

The Wish I Was Here soundtrack features music that was personally chose by Braff. This new movie is Braff's first one since his cult favorite movie Garden State (starring Braff and Natalie Portman) was shown in 2004. The Garden State Soundtrack bagged a 2005 Grammy award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. The album went on platinum, selling 1.3 million copies.

This soundtrack for Wish I Was Here, feature new songs by favorites from the old album soundtrack, including The Shins ("So Now What"), and Bon Iver ("Heavenly Father").

Braff showed an initial version of the movie to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, and the band started working on the song. "Chris had the idea that it would be sung by a woman. I thought that was a genius idea, because one of the things the film is about is a strong woman (Kate Hudson's character) becoming the matriarch of her family. When Chris and I were talking, we both kind of simultaneously said, 'Cat Power.' I reached out to Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) and she and I met and really clicked. I set her up to watch the film in her apartment. The whole time she was watching she kept texting me all the different parts she was loving. She said yes the instant it was over," says Braff.

Braff and his brother Adam raised money on the website Kickstarter in order to produce Wish I Was Here. The brothers wrote the screenplay for the film. It debuted at the Sundance Film Festival to glowing reviews. The movie stars Kate Hudson and Zach Braff.

Wish I Was Here will open on July 25.

In the meantime, listen to the title track by Coldplay and Cat Power here.
