The Interstellar trailer has had 19.5 million views on just its first week on Youtube, according to data from Zefr, which tracks the number of views on the site. Many of these views are repeat ones from fans who cannot get enough information about the movie, and who try to comb the scenes for clues.
It's one of those trailers that shows a lot, but then again, not much. Which is how director Christopher Nolan (The Prestige, Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy) likes to keep it.
But here's what we know based on what is detailed on the movie's website, as well as what can be concluded from the trailer:
Interstellar is hard science fiction. According to the movie's official website, the movie's plot is based in part to astrophysicist Kip Thorne's studies on the subject of time travel and wormholes. Thorne is now actually a consultant in the movie.
We also know from the trailer that Matthew McConaughey plays a father who is called upon by the government on some top-secret, dangerous mission that will take him to the far-reaches of outer because mankind was mean to leave the world, as Michael Caine's character says. The movie's tagline is, "Mankind was born on earth. But we were never meant to die here."
Still, the whole movie is shrouded in much secrecy. Even Kip Thorne, on whose science the movie is based is keeping mum, and has commented on the hush-hush nature that surrounds Interstellar.
In an interview with phys.org, Thorne has remarked, "Greater secrecy surrounds Interstellar than most any movie that's been done in Hollywood. I'm not allowed to talk about it, but let's just say that I've been spending a lot of my time on it in the last year. And I've recently finished writing a book about the science in Interstellar."
Meanwhile, one of the movie's stars, Jessica Chastain, is similarly tight-lipped. But she does talk about director Christopher Nolan, and reveals that the movie has a lot of heart at its core. "Christopher Nolan is brilliant. He's like the captain of the ship. One thing I think people will be surprised about Interstellar is that it's more emotional than you would expect it to be. It's very warm. I like the idea of people going in and having no idea what it's about and hopefully being surprised, and moved."
Interstellar opens on November 7, 2014.
