A 10-month-old baby girl was left on a New York City subway platform on Monday by her 20-year-old mother.
The woman, Frankea Dabbs, was charged with child abandonment and acting in a manner injurious to a child, police stated, according to the LA Times.
Dabbs reportedly stated that she was homeless, leading police to suspect that she left her baby on the NYC subway platform because she could not care for her properly, law enforcement officials stated on Tuesday.
Police stated that Dabbs allegedly pushed her daughter's stroller off the 1 train and onto a platform at the Columbus Circle station around lunchtime on Monday and got back in the subway car alone, according to NBC New York.
A bystander reportedly saw the unattended stroller on the subway platform and stayed with the baby for about 20 minutes, but when no one returned for the child, she contacted authorities.
Dabbs was taken into custody after midnight near 72nd street and Broadway after police were told of her location by a tipster who had seen the widely circulated photos and video, stated police.
The mother of the baby girl reportedly told authorities that she's from North Carolina and came to New York on July 2. She said the baby's father died recently in California.
Dabbs has previously been arrested in multiple states on drug, assault, prostitution and breaking and entering charges.
The baby was examined at a hospital and is in good health. She is currently in the custody of the New York City Administrations for Children's Services, according to police.
