The trend of mega cupcakes has officially come to a sad, but necessary end.
Crumbs bakery has closed down all of its 48 stores in 10 states on Monday, according to NY Daily News.
The decision to close down the chain was made days after the Nasdaq dropped Crumbs bakery on July 1.
"Regrettably Crumbs has been forced to cease operations and is immediately attending to the dislocation of its devoted employees while it evaluates its limited remaining options," the cupcake shop told the Wall Street Journal in a statement.
One of those options could be filing for bankruptcy, the newspaper reports, according to USA Today.
Crumbs bakery was loved by cupcake lovers all around when it first opened back in March 2003 in Manhattan, N.Y. The company reportedly went public about its troubles as the "cupcake boom" deflated in 2011, the newspaper reports.
Evan Feldman, owner of Doughnuttery in Chelsea Market, explains that treats that come in smaller portions, like his tiny donuts, are the new trend.
Popular bakeshops, including Treat House, Baked By Melissa and Laduree, have all followed the trend of bite-sized treats, leading them to their current success in New York City.
"People are more health conscious (and they don't want to) eat one big gluttonous cupcake," states Feldman.
