The grief of Neymar's injury in the last four days have taken a massive toll on Brazil's performance today. A really massive one. As Germany scored seven goals brilliantly, the Selecao left devastated as they lost this embarrassing semifinal in their own country. This is their heaviest defeat ever.
Although everyone was ranting about Neymar's absence for the semifinal, the real loss they felt was team captain Thiago Silva's. As Silva, Brazil's cornerstone of defense, was suspended for the game, everything was made easier for the Joachim Low's side to score.
With just eleven minutes into the first half, the Selecao knew they were in trouble, as Thomas Muller scored the first goal in the penalty area. And then another one from Miroslav Klose greeted the goal just a little over 20 minutes from the starting whistle.
The Germans looked unstoppable, as Toni Kroos scored a double, within just a two- minute interval. Then, finishing the series of goals for the first half, Sami Khedira scored Germany's fifth goal in the 29th minute.
At the end of the first quarter, Germany was already leading in the 5-0 mark.
In the second half, Low's side even proved that they are capable of making more goals as Andre Schurrle scored twice in the 69th and 78th minute. Although the Brazilians tried to kept up with the Germans fast paced game play, it seemed too late to even think that they can score against them.
In the 90th minute, at last, Germany gave Brazil a consolation. A closing goal from Oscar has put the scoreboards in a 7-1 win for the Germans.
It is the first time that a team has ever made 7 goals in a knockout game in the World Cup finals, and it is also the first time that Brazil lost so terribly.
Nevertheless, Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said, "It's the worst moment of my football career and the worst day of my football life. But life goes on. Who is responsible for this result? I am, it's me."
