Nigeria has been slammed with a suspension coming from FIFA with regards to the Nigerian government's intervention on matters that involved Nigeria football leaders. It has been reported that government fired their football officials following their world cup exit and issues with player bonuses.

The suspension was effective last July 9 which covers that the Nigerian Teams as well as their officials will not be able to join international matches and meetings. FIFA said in their official statement "no team from Nigeria of any sort (including clubs) can have any international sporting contact (art. 14 par. 3 of the FIFA Statutes). During the period of suspension, the NFF may not be represented in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, or in friendly matches. The most immediate effect is that Nigeria will not be entitled to participate in the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup (5-24 August 2014) should the suspension not be lifted by 15 July 2014."

It continues "In addition, neither the NFF nor any of its members or officials may benefit from any FIFA or CAF development programmes, courses or training during the suspension period."

News broke out that the Nigerian government overthrew the football federation leadership as well as arrested its president Aminu Maigari when he arrived back from Brazil. According to their government, the football officials had embarrassed the country by not settling the dispute of player pay.

According to the FIFA rules, they are to protect their federation members from influences of third parties which include the government.

But FIFA is giving the government a chance and will lift the ban once the court actions raised against the football officials will be lifted. It says "The suspension will be lifted once the court actions have been withdrawn and the properly elected NFF Executive Committee, the NFF general assembly and the NFF administration are able to work without any interference in their affairs."

Nigeria was also banned by FIFA before as the Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan tried to withdraw the Nigeria team from international completion not until the team improves their performance. This happened after the 2010 World Cup.
