Netherlands just lost their chance in clenching the title of the FIFA World Cup champion as they lost to Argentina over penalty shots. There were lots of moments when Netherlands had when it seemed like they already had the opportunity for a goal during the game but they were not able to turn any shots into a score.
The full time game between Argentina and Netherlands didn't materialize any goals from both ends. Even after they were given extra time, there were not much events that took place during the additional time given. Going to the match statistics, it was very clear that both teams were competitive though Netherlands showed more aggressiveness compared to Argentina. Netherlands also had higher possessions rates at 53% while Argentina had 47%. On the other hand, the latter had higher total shots at 8 having 5 shots on target while Holland had 7 totals shots and 3 of them on target.
During the match, there were a couple of Argentinean key players who received injuries during their tackle with Netherlands. But this did not deter the willpower of Argentineans for their coveted championship win.
When the last whistle to commence the end of the games was heard, the final scorecard showed 0-0 on the standings. This meant that both teams have to resolve the game on penalty shots in order to determine who will proceed to the finals to face Germany.
Netherlands took to the field for their shot at the penalty's and it was Ron Vlaar who made his first kick which unfortunately for the team, didn't go through. Next up was the crowd favorite, Lionel Messi for Argentina. Messi made the fans proud by making the first goal of the game through his penalty shot. This changed the score to 0(1)-0(0) in favor of Argentina.
As the next penalty shot was given, Netherlands made a clear goal via Arjen Robben which tied the score but Ezequil Garay of Argentina made sure that they are still ahead of the race with another goal for the team.
Next up was Wesley Sneijder from Netherlands. It was so unfortunate that he was not able to shoot on target which placed their team in a critical position. From those two failed shots, Netherlands was not able to recover. Though Dirk Kuyt was able to make a goal on his penalty shot which gave them 2 goals, Argentina's Sergio Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez made sure to secure their place in the finals.
The games finally ended in a 0(4)-0(2) finish with Argentina going to the finals.
