Netherlands Coach Louis van Gaal not interested in Third Place Game

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal would rather go home than play the third place game against Brazil. Netherlands just lost their chance in clenching the title of the FIFA World Cup champion as they lost to Argentina over penalty shots. There were lots of moments when Netherlands had when it seemed like they already had the opportunity for a goal during the game but they were not able to turn any shots into a score.

According to van Gaal "This game has nothing to do with sports in my opinion. But I have said this 10 years or 15 years ago and nothing changed. No tournament, no football tournament, especially in the last stage, should you have players playing for third or fourth."

The Dutch coach feels strongly with regards to removing the third place match and sees it as meaningless. For him "There is only one prize and one award that counts for anything and that is becoming champion."

He has been seconded by Netherlands forward Arjen Robben when he answered questions with regards to their match for third place saying "They can keep it. Only one prize counts and that is becoming world champion."

The Dutch's feeling of resentment is understandable. Having been through to the finals several times in the World Cup, all they ever wanted was to win the championships. Brazil on the other hand would take the third place game seriously. They are seeing this as a window of opportunity to redeem themselves to the fans which makes them more determined to try harder.

According to Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari "Life goes on, we need to look forward to our next goal, and our next goal is to win the match for third place, We have to play it. It has become our main goal."

Van Gaal has cited a couple of reasons why he disliked the third place game. One is the possibility of double humiliation; the chance of losing the semis and the third match is a burden to the tea, Aside from that, they have less time to rest compared to Brazil.

He said "We will have one day less to recover and that's not fair play. But the worst thing is, I believe, there is a chance that you lose twice in a row in a tournament in which you've played so marvelously well. You go home as a 'loser' because possibly you've lost the last two matches."
