After the much-loved TV series How I Met Your Mother wrapped up early this year after a nine-season run, fans looked forward to a possible spin-off brewed by CBS and the original creators of the show called How I Met Your Dad. A pilot had even been ordered, starring No Strings Attached actress Greta Gerwig, with Meg Ryan providing narration.
Reports said that it would be in the network's 2014-2015 lineup, but now it looks like the show may never get to air at all.
While unveiling the network's new schedule in May, CBS chief Nina Tassler told reporters that they just didn't think "certain creative elements" of How I Met Your Dad was working out. "To say we love this show and we love these producers is an understatement. They are beloved, and we have an extraordinary relationship with them. But there were elements in the pilot that didn't work out."
They then started talks with creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas about redeveloping another pilot. But new reports say that the network has no desire to revisit the pilot without the approval and series order of CBS. Tassler said she was "heartsick" over the situation. "We love this brand and we love this show but it didn't work out."
And while fans still held a small glimmer of hope that the spinoff could still happen in the future, HIMYM co-creator Bays took to Twitter to clarify that he and Thomas are not currently focused on How I Met Your Dad.
"I don't know why I keep reading articles about this, but since nobody bothers asking us: We are really, truly not working on HIMYD anymore," Bays tweeted last July 11.
"HIMYD was fun to work on, terrific cast, terrific writer, but it's over now and we have other stuff we want to do. Maybe in the future it could be something, but I think we need to try something new before we go back to it," he continued.
Bays finished his series of tweets with, "To everyone who wanted to see it, I'm sorry. (And to everyone who didn't, you're welcome!"
