Marvel is looking for a new Captain America to replace its beloved Steve Rogers; in case the plan pushes through with the graphic novels, then Chris Evans will likely follow suit after Avengers 3.
Rumors won't let up after the end credits of "The Avengers 2," among these involves the future of the superheroes in the next installment of the series. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" also introduced a character unfamiliar to most moviegoers, but Marvel managed to round out the Bucky Barnes character.
And then there's also Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie. It seems Marvel Studios is gradually spoon-feeding new characters in Captain America's universe, in an effort to see if one would be good enough to wield the shield, if the Super-Soldier serum fits.
Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America is reduced to his old, frail self in the current plot of the graphic novels (by Rick Remender), and the Cap is now looking for someone to take his post as the Avengers' resident boy scout. The revelation is still a long way off, though, with Captain America #25 to release in September (ign.com).
The plot thickens in the graphic novels as the new Captain America rises from the old one's ashes. Most of the suspects are your usual fare of replacements, including Falcon a.k.a. Sam Wilson, USAgent, and even adopted son Ian from Dimension Z.
Comic book fans (and probably even moviegoers) could be set up for a surprise, though. Red Skull could make a comeback not as a villain but as a replacement, shocking as it may seem. Captain America's arch-enemy has been the hero in several graphic novel stories, and Marvel could pull a fast one at the movies if they play their cards right.
Bucky Barnes as the Winter Soldier earned serious street cred after the Captain America sequel, and fans are keen enough to welcome anti-heroes as part of the Avengers (think Loki), considering their next super-villain's morality doesn't dabble with human standards.
So, who's going to be the New Captain America? Will Anthony Mackie pull a fast one, like Don Cheadle in Iron Man 3? Here's hoping the end credits of "The Avengers 2" settles the debate (comicbook.com).
