What was so special with Germany's coach Joachim Loew's message to Mario Goetze that he was determined to secure the goal for the team?
Mario Goetze came in to the game against Argentina as a substitute to striker Miroslav Klose. He came in during the 88th minute during a game which was deadlock to a score 0-0. But before Goetze was able to step inside the field his coach, Joachim Loew had some special word left for him before playing. His message was not some technical game plan to score but rather, he Loew gave the attacking midfielder a challenge that he can't seem to refuse.
Here is what Loew said to Goetze "I said to Mario Goetze, 'OK, show to the world that you're better than [Lionel] Messi, show that you can decide the World Cup,'"
Become better than Messi? It was something that Goetze was up to the challenge. He did as was told, he put in the one and only goal for the final game against Argentina, something that Messi wished he could have done so too.
Because of that goal, Germany has won their fourth World Cup title at the Maracana Stadium. This is the second time in the World Cup history that both teams faced each other. The first was during the 1990 World Cup where Germany won other Argentina in a clean 1-0 victory. And it seemed like history repeated itself as after twenty four long years, they faced each other again in the finale and coincidentally, Germany won over Argentina in a 1-0 finish. But this time around, the game did not end on the full time but rather after the extra time.
Goetze was inside the left side of the penalty box when he received the ball coming from Andre Schurrle's and landed on his chest. He then managed to drop the ball to his left foot and strike it so fast that he bypass goalkeeper Sergio Romero and hit the right side of the net into the goal.
Loew added "Mario Goetze is a miracle boy, a boy wonder who can play any position," Loew said. "He has superior technical quality. I knew he could be decisive in the match. It was a great decider today."
Goetze on the other hand was head over heels happy with the result of the game "I'm more than happy. And I'm happy with the team and what happened here in Brazil. I guess it's more or less indescribable how I feel. It is absolutely sensational."
