Even as the first season of Constantine sets to premiere this October, the NBC supernatural thriller is already bidding its lead actress goodbye.

True Blood's Lucy Griffiths, who signed on for the show's pilot has exited the drama. She was cast as Liv Aberdine, taken under the wing of the show's lead, John Constantine, when she is hunted by a demon. In the pilot, she was introduced as the daughter of one of Constantine's friends, and John takes an interest when he finds out that she is able to see the supernatural.

Like its movie predecessor, Constantine centers on master of the occult John Constantine (to be portrayed by Matt Ryan), who is suddenly given the role of defending humanity from the forces of darkness even as he struggles with his faith and is haunted by his previous wrongdoings. The show is based from popular comic book series Hellblazer.

Griffiths will be replaced with an original Hellblazer character named Zed, a psychic who teams up with Constantine to get rid of the forces of evil. There have been no talks as to who will portray the character.

Griffith's exit wasn't due to any conflict, but was due to the show's creators deciding to move in a new direction. Executive Producer Daniel Cerone told Entertainment Weekly that replacing Liv with the more experienced and "feisty" Zed would give Constantine a more effective partner. "Zed is actually one of the first women Constantine meets in the comic books, and she has various psychic powers. We felt ultimately she's going to service the first season better as someone to pair Constantine up with. She can get in his face a little bit and have some of her own realizations and skills and really push him. But if whoever Constantine is working with is constantly on her heels, that just wouldn't service the show really well."
