After being thrashed 7-1 by Germany in the semi-final match and losing 3-0 against Netherlands in the third-place play-off, Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has resigned as the country's football federation confirmed. "Luiz Felipe Scolari and his fellow coaching staff surrendered their positions to the board," the CBF confirmed in a statement. "Scolari and his entire coaching staff deserve our respect and gratitude. They were responsible for returning to the Brazilian people your love for the national team, despite not having achieved our greatest goal."
Scolari first handled the team in 2001 and led them to the World Cup success a year later, beating Germany in 2-0 in the 2002 final in Yokohama Japan. They were able to beat Colombia 2-1 in the quarter-final match but lost their top goalscorer Neymar due to a fracture in his vertebra and their team captain Thiago Silva was suspended.
It was an awful struggle for Brazil that resulted to a humiliating defeat not only for the team but for the entire country as well not to mention being the host of the tournament. Scolari said that the loss against Germany marked the worst day of his life and because of this; he announced that he will resign to the position and the team's future will be decided after the play-off against Netherlands. It has been decided now that they have lost their final World Cup match for this year's tournament. Scolari has officially resigned.
For Brazil, the tournament started with optimism and a promise as they were the five-time champions and a lot were expected from them most especially. These all ended with a painful humiliation and a tragic nightmare for the entire country.
