After it was announced that Marvel Comics is changing the Thor character into a female, critics can't help but question why.
Despite claims, Marvel executive director Ryan Penagos stresses that this is not some type of method to lure female fans.
Marvel Editor-in-Chief, Axel Alonso, gave Time some incite on the new storyline without giving too much away.
"Thor is unable to pick up the hammer," explained Alonso. "One of the women in Thor’s life picks up the hammer. She is in fact worthy. And she becomes Thor."
Although Thor being a female is a first for Marvel Comics, a woman has been worthy enough to pick up the hammer in the past.
"There have been occasional stories where a female has picked up the hammer," said Wil Moss, Thor series editor. "Like there’s an X-Men story where Storm picked up the hammer."
Jason Aaron, writer of the Thor series, likes the fact that fans are curious about where the original Thor is going.
"People have a lot of questions on Twitter: what’s going to happen to the previous version of Thor? Who is this new version? That’s good that people have questions. We’re not going to answer all those right now. Those are things that will be developed over the course of many issues. So it’s a good think people are asking those questions," he said.
Another common question is how the character change is going to effect Chris Hemsworth who has three more movies to do as Thor according to his Marvel Studios contract.
"We do the best stories as we can, and whatever Marvel Studios wants to co-opt for their franchises, they do it, and we’re happy to help them with that," said Chris D'Lando, Marvel PR rep. "But right now we’re focusing that Jason’s story is the best and biggest it can be."
