Here is the synopsis of the sequel, as published on IMDb:
"A couple are driving home to their kids when their car runs out of gas just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, a police sergeant goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles."
In an article by Forbes, film critic Scott Mendelson said that the sequel is "a horror film for our time."
Mendelson also noted that "The Purge: Anarchy" was a major improvement.
"The picture, again written and directed by James DeMonaco, actually has a handful of real surprises up its sleeve in the second and third acts. And since you don't have main characters trying to justify the slaughter this time around, the film can unapologetically hold up a mirror and see our sex-entitled, gun-crazy, rich-vs.-poor culture staring back at us."
"Like Idiocracy, The Purge: Anarchy takes a seemingly far-fetched premise and shows us how close we are to that respective end point. The film doesn't generally rely on horror tropes (a few jump scares at best), but there is a real "What would you do/how long you would last?" empathy at play. There is also some strong exploration of the notion of genuine moral actions in a situation where immorality is explicitly sanctioned."
