"Falling Skies" series was renewed for fifth and final season by TNT network, which also announced the extension of "The Last Ship" for the second season.
According to Deadline, "Falling Skies" series was renewed for a final 10 episodes while the network also ordered for 13 episodes for the second season of "The Last Ship."
TNT president Michael Wright said in a statement published on ScreenCrushfollowing the "Falling Skies" series renewal:
"Falling Skies has begun an ambitious and thrilling story arc this summer as it sets the stage for next year's climactic final season," he said.
The website added that "Falling Skies" cast and production team will also join the San Diego Comic-Con.
"The Last Ship" premiere whiplashed the competition as it became this year's most watched debut show on cable. Michael Bay's action series is reportedly getting a budget of $2.5 million per episode.
The show is based on the novel of the same title by William Brinkley, about a ship and its crew that survived a global pandemic that killed billions of people.
"The Last Ship" stars Eric Dane ("Grey's Anatomy") as ship Capt. Tom Chandler who helms the USS Nathan James; Rhona Mitra as the paelomicrobiologist who will unravel the mystery of how billions were killed by the pandemic; Adam Baldwin as the executive officer of the ship; and Tracy Middendorf also stars as Chandler's wife.
Meanwhile, the "Falling Skies" series has approached "Game of Thrones" territory, according to Cartermatt, as the show often faces the challenge of having to push the premise forward quickly so it doesn't focus too much on one thesis.
"This series falls somewhat into 'Game of Thrones' territory in that there is so much work that goes into post-production and getting the effects right that they really cannot film that many episodes over the course of the year," it said.
